Imiano sat under the mango tree. He could not understand what exactly he had done to Chioma that made her to hate him so much. Though, they are at loggerheads as both families were dragging lands, he has tried on several occasions to explain to her that he is not one with his father but she would never take any of that.
Left alone, he would have left the village for a saner clime but all eyes were on him. The villagers know him as the son of the famous palm wine tapper and he was proud of that but he wanted a better title. So, he joined the wrestling guild claiming that he wants to leave clear evidence for his children showing that he is a strong person.
All the youths feared him but most of the girls loved him but he was careful with them as he would not want any of them to damage his image and bring doom to his great repute but he seems to have met his match. The tree beneath which Imiano sat has a past. It was the only tree that remained in the heart of Umiduru village after a neighbouring town invaded them without notice and a serious fight ensured to the extent that the king of Umiduru led the warriors directly as he came from a long line of warriors and superb hunters. In fact, it was even rumoured that he once killed a lion. His forefathers were known to have taken the throne forcefully from another king who was weaker. So, forceful eviction was not new to them.
When they the people of Modili that invaded them, so many people came from both far and near to congratulate them but it was short-lived as the Modili king who escaped formed an ally with Kentola people who were known to be ruthless and invaded the arena again. This time, it was a free for all fight but it was rumoured that while the fight was going on, a Mango tree appeared from nowhere, walked to the centre of the battlefield and exploded. No one knew where it was coming from but as fate would have it, only Umiduru people survived that ordeal as everybody was left breathless and the mango tree moved back and was later discovered to have planted itself at the middle of the town where no one could reach it except the strong and Imiano was one.
As legend would have it, all the other trees in the land dried up as the mango tree found its way to the middle of the village dancing as the people of Umiduru celebrated their victories and occupied the next village within a matter of weeks. Looking back now, Imiano wondered what he would have done if he was already a youth by the time the fight took place but he had not an inkling as he shook his head. Though, the mango tree gave them victory, they never worshipped it and thanks to time, flowering trees have started growing in the town but this time, only medicinal ones were seen. So, trees which had no value except for the firewood they produced never grew. After the incident, the Umiduru people were instructed to go to the neighbouring town which they had conquered in search of firewood and leave those medicinal ones behind as they were reserved. The mango tree was later coronated the king of trees in town but it was never worshipped. So it was that the good people of Umiduru had a rich history and people came from afar to witness it. In fact, the spot where Imiano sat was a major tourist centre.
