THE TOWN CRIER 2

 Ezege was just coming back from the village stream when he met Chioma along the way. So, he stopped to greet her but she did not respond. Though, Chioma is his younger sister, he accords her much respect and at times, she behaves strangely. This afternoon, she has decided not to respond to greetings which thing has become a strange habit to the people around her. It was rumoured that Chioma was to succeed the village deity Appeaser who was a female as the deity was always known to be aggressive and the villagers had even gotten tired of it but there was nothing they could do about it as it was one of the ills imposed on them by their ancestors. So, they carried it on their heads like burden. 


Chioma's own was worse!  Ever since she returned from the city where she went to stay with Mazi Ugezu their uncle, nobody has ever known her whereabouts. Though, she could be with you physically but mentally, she was far away. Even Imiano had tried to grab her attention but no success was recorded. She complained that at times, she would see herself in an imaginary land picking fruits from trees and also plucking unripe ones but no one could cure her. Not even the village deity Appeaser as they never believed in juju but so much agree on self-preservation of sane cultures. That afternoon as Ezege greeted her and she could not answer, she was busy thinking about how she could slap Imiano to reset his brain for all the numerous rubbish he has been telling her such as that she should accept him as one of her closest allies and he would fly her around the world. The imiano she knew had never left the village. So, that was a blatant lie and she would never buy any of that. So, she choose to keep herself especially about things that had to do with her leaving the city after staying for four years there. It happened that she was kidnapped and after the uncle could not raise the money required for her release, he collaborated with the anti-kidnap forces to help her escape! When they returned to the house after her release, he paid for her transport back to the village while he relocated. That was all they could get to know about her while the rest remained an ordeal she better left untold. 


This evening, Imiano had decided to take it all out on her as he rehearsed lines from what he wanted to tell her. After much practicing, he got tired and fell asleep under the mango tree. So it was that Ezege came to meet him there as they had been friends.

 We accompanied her to her father's house that evening, all we cared about was for her two kids to be alright. As a home walker, I was trained to bear people's burden upon my shoulders despite the fact that at times, it was not funny and it wasn't meant to be.
